But this notion of a Western Welfare State is more Asian caricature than empirical reality. The last decades of research on welfare regimes has shown us that there are at least three “worlds of welfare capitalism”. European countries could then be seen to belong to different welfare regimes and types of capitalism. Liberal market states + a justifying ideology that treats inequality as a natural and entirely acceptable byproduct of the smooth functioning of markets.
